Set up and test heat, thermostat, lighting and monitoring in advance. Confirm the secure lid or doors, hiding places and water access. Keep the enclosure in a location where conditions are stable and contact with other animals and shared equipment is controlled.
Keep furnishings simple but humane
Provide appropriate hides, thermal choice and essential structure without creating many inaccessible cavities. Use surfaces that make waste and abnormalities visible. Simplicity should improve observation, not remove the animal’s basic security.
Separate tools and workflow
Use dedicated tongs, bowls, cleaning tools and storage where practical. Attend established animals before quarantined animals, then clean hands and manage clothing or footwear according to the risk. Do not move substrate, décor or uneaten food between enclosures.
Record rather than rely on memory
Log feeding offers and responses, weight where appropriate, waste, sheds, visible concerns and environmental readings. A short dated record is far more useful to a veterinarian than a general impression that the animal has “seemed off”.
Escalate health concerns promptly
Quarantine is not treatment. Breathing difficulty, neurological signs, significant injury, repeated regurgitation, marked weight loss or other concerning changes require a reptile-experienced veterinarian. Ask the veterinarian about testing and quarantine duration for the individual animal.
