Consider body size, mobility, chewing style, group size and normal movement. Guinea pigs generally need low, easy access and clear floor routes; rats may use layered vertical routes but still need sensible fall protection.
Measure the installed shape
Record the cage attachment spacing and available drop, not only the flat fabric dimensions. A hammock changes shape under weight. Keep it away from doors, wheels, unsafe fittings and places where an animal can become trapped behind it.
Inspect every surface
Check stitching, seams, fabric faces, internal filling, loops and clips. Feel for hard or sharp damage. Look for loose threads, enlarged holes, thinning fabric, corrosion and deformation.
Wash and dry completely
Follow the product instructions, use an animal-appropriate routine and ensure the item is fully dry. Keep spare pieces so washing does not encourage returning damp fabric to the habitat.
Use a simple retirement rule
Remove the hammock when damage could entangle, expose filling, fail under weight or resist proper cleaning. Sentimental value does not restore structural safety.
