Choose the job and position first
A high sleeping hammock, low fall-breaker and tunnel do different jobs. Keep access comfortable and avoid forcing rats past a dominant cage mate. Position fabric away from unsafe heat, electrical equipment and external snag hazards.
Use secure, inspectable attachments
Clips and loops must suit the cage bars and animal. Confirm that openings cannot trap a head, limb or toe. Recheck after washing and cage rearrangement; hardware can remain clipped while fabric twists into an unsafe position.
Treat chewing as information
Some chewing is normal investigation; severe damage can create loose threads, exposed filling, enlarged holes or failed suspension. Remove unsafe items promptly. Offer appropriate chew and nesting opportunities rather than relying on fabric alone.
Wash for the material and household
Follow the maker’s care instructions, remove hardware where required, rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Rotate spare hammocks so damp items do not return to the cage. Disease-related cleaning needs veterinary guidance.
Retire before failure
Discard or repair items when seams, suspension points or fabric structure can no longer be trusted. Do not wait for a hammock to fall with an animal inside.
Common questions
How many hammocks do rats need?
There is no universal number. Provide multiple suitable resting choices for the group while preserving movement and cleaning access.
Can I leave frayed fabric in the cage?
No. Loose threads, holes, exposed filling and weakened attachments can create entanglement or fall risks.
Are metal clips always best?
Hardware must be correctly sized, secure and free of sharp edges. The safest choice depends on the cage, product and animals.
