The ledge and the lamp are one design problem.
A permanent raised platform changes the animal’s distance from heat and UVB equipment. That means the ledge should not be sculpted first and “lit later”. Start with the intended equipment and species requirements, then decide where a broad, stable platform can sit while preserving cooler and shaded choices elsewhere.
Plan the finished animal-to-fixture distance
Measure from the surface the animal will actually use, not from the enclosure floor. A raised ledge can dramatically reduce the distance to a lamp or UVB fixture. Use the relevant manufacturer and husbandry guidance for the equipment and species when setting the final geometry.
Make the useful surface bigger than the photo suggests
A narrow edge may look sculptural but can be a poor resting place. Where a basking platform is appropriate, allow enough room for the animal to position its body rather than balancing partly over the edge. Adult body size matters.
Give it a sensible route up and down
A good destination needs a route. Think about the branch, ramp, lower shelf or textured transition that connects to the basking area. Also think about the descent; an animal should not need an awkward drop simply because the design looks cleaner without another transition.
Keep the rest of the enclosure useful
Do not let one feature dominate every environmental choice. Preserve shelter and cooler areas, keep doors and vents usable, and make sure the ledge does not block equipment service. The best basking ledge earns its space without making everything else worse.
