UVB selection is species- and setup-dependent. A useful guide therefore avoids pretending that one tube fits every enclosure. Start with the animal’s requirements, then consider the lamp output, fixture, mounting distance, mesh or other obstruction, replacement schedule and the height of any permanent basking structure.
The same lamp can produce a very different result depending on mounting height, mesh, reflector, basking-platform height and species. Read the layout notes first, then open only when you know what the enclosure actually needs.

UVB planning is not finished when you choose a tube. The fixture, output, distance, mesh, basking height and the animal’s ability to move into shade all affect how useful the final setup is. That is why permanent ledges should be planned with the lighting rather than independently.
Different reptiles use light differently, so avoid copying a lamp choice from a completely different species or enclosure. Establish the animal’s lighting requirements first, then use the manufacturer’s guidance for the lamp and fixture you are considering.
The important distance is not simply roof to floor. A raised basking platform or thick substrate can bring the animal much closer to the lamp. Mesh, reflectors and mounting orientation can also alter the delivered light. Plan using the finished basking height, not the empty enclosure height.
A useful enclosure should not force the animal to remain in the same light intensity everywhere. Physical cover, hides and shaded areas allow behavioural choice. A custom backdrop can help create these transitions as long as it does not unintentionally block the intended UV zone.
UVB lamps and fixtures need ongoing access. Leave enough room to remove tubes, clean reflectors and inspect fittings without dismantling permanent scenery. Write the installation date somewhere convenient so replacement schedules are easier to manage.
You can, but it often makes the job harder because permanent ledges set the distance and can create unexpected obstruction. Planning them together is much easier.
