Cleaning equipment: make the enclosure easy to live with.
Cleaning is not the glamorous part of enclosure design, but it is one of the best tests of whether a custom feature is actually good. You should be able to reach waste, remove bowls, inspect hides and clean around scenery without dismantling the whole enclosure.

The easiest time to solve a cleaning problem is before the enclosure is built. Removable bowls, accessible hides, reachable corners and replaceable natural branches make routine care much easier. Good enclosure design assumes that food, substrate, water and waste will eventually get somewhere inconvenient.
Separate daily cleaning from deep cleaning
Daily care should be quick: remove waste, replace dirty water and deal with obvious spills. Deeper cleaning is where removable bowls, branch systems and accessible hides become valuable. If every routine task requires dismantling the habitat, maintenance will eventually be delayed.
Avoid hidden waste traps
Deep decorative cracks can look impressive but collect substrate and waste. Texture does not need to mean inaccessible crevices. Where a cavity is part of the design, make sure it can be seen, reached or opened.
Keep tools dedicated to animal care
Small brushes, tongs and cleaning containers are easier to manage if they are kept for enclosure use rather than borrowed from the kitchen or workshop. Label them and store them somewhere convenient so spot cleaning actually happens when needed.
Design removable pieces deliberately
A custom bowl recess can hold a dish steady while still allowing it to lift out. A hide can look integrated while having a removable lid. Natural branches can use concealed removable anchors. Custom does not have to mean permanently trapped.

- Test whether your hand and cleaning brush fit into every cave before finalising it.
- Use a torch to inspect underneath large ledges.
- Keep a small lidded waste container near the enclosure for quick spot cleaning.
- Photograph removable branch locations before taking everything apart for a deep clean.

Questions people usually ask
Can a built-in hide still be easy to clean?
Yes. Removable roofs, accessible openings and thoughtful internal shape can keep it practical while preserving an integrated look.
Should every piece of décor be removable?
Not necessarily, but fixed pieces should not prevent inspection and cleaning of the areas around them.
