Start with the problem, not a list of materials.
A useful first brief can be as simple as: “the tank has plenty of height but most of it is wasted,” or “I want the back wall to provide climbing and resting points without blocking the doors.” That tells us more than guessing at a construction method.
Include the animal or species, the enclosure type and the thing you want to work better. Style references are useful too, but function and fit are what let the project become specific.
The measurements that usually change the answer.
For backdrop work, the most useful starting measurements are the internal usable width, internal usable height and internal depth. “Usable” matters because tracks, braces, vents, door frames and fixed equipment can reduce the space available to a finished piece.
- Measure the opening the finished piece has to pass through, not only the space it occupies once inside.
- Photograph and measure door tracks, braces, vents and cable entry points that sit near the backdrop.
- If a dimension is uncertain, label it as uncertain rather than making it look exact.
- For very large projects, note whether the backdrop must be built in sections for transport or installation.
Four photos can answer a surprising number of questions.
A straight-on photo of the enclosure, one from each side and one showing the access/door arrangement is an excellent start. Add close-ups of anything awkward: vents, cable holes, braces, drains, mist lines or existing fixtures.
Arrows and rough annotations are welcome. A phone photo with “FOG OUTLET HERE?” written on it can be more useful than a long paragraph.
Think in routes, zones and service access.
Rather than placing isolated shelves, think about how the pieces relate to one another. A platform can be part of a climbing route; a cave can sit beneath a ledge; a plant pocket can help visually soften a service hatch.
If the design includes pumps, waterfalls, foggers, lighting, sensors or cabling, identify where the equipment will live and how it can be reached later. Decorative scenery is much easier to enjoy when routine access was not designed out of it.
What should be resolved before a final quote is treated as final?
The final customer-facing scope should make clear which features are included, which are optional, the agreed dimensions or assumptions, who is installing the piece, and any site information still waiting to be confirmed.
