UVB placement: design the basking route around the light.
UVB equipment is only useful if the intended light can actually reach the animal at an appropriate position. The lamp, reflector, mesh, distance, ledge height and shade options all work as one layout.

The most common planning mistake is choosing a backdrop first and trying to squeeze the lighting around it later. Permanent ledges can change the animal’s distance from a UVB lamp, while deep roofs and decorative overhangs can create unexpected shade.
Start with the exact species and the manufacturer guidance for the actual lamp and fixture. Then draw the usable UV zone onto the enclosure plan before you decide where permanent basking surfaces belong.
1. Treat lamp + reflector + distance as a system
Do not select UVB by tube length alone. Output, reflector, fixture, mounting method and distance all affect the useful result. A fixture that looks similar can perform differently to another one.
For Australian keepers, we would start with products that are easy to replace locally. For an appropriate higher-output T5 HO setup, the Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 T5 HO is a useful Amazon AU example and is also carried by Australian reptile retailers. For an Australia-wide alternative, Reptile One T5 UVB tubes in 7% and 12% outputs pair with the Reptile One ReptiGlo T5 reflector range . Choose output, reflector and mounting distance for the actual species and finished enclosure; a familiar brand name is not a substitute for the manufacturer distance guidance.
2. Mesh and barriers belong in the calculation
Ordinary glass and many plastics block useful UVB. Mesh can also reduce the amount delivered, depending on its construction. That means “the lamp is 30 cm away” is incomplete information if there is a screen, reflector arrangement or other obstruction in between.
When planning a custom backdrop, tell us whether the lamp will sit inside the enclosure or above mesh. That changes how high a permanent shelf should be and whether a removable branch might be a better way to fine-tune the final route.
3. Give the animal a way into and out of the zone
Good lighting design is about choice. The animal should have access to the intended UV/basking zone, but also shade, shelter and a route away from it. A dramatic full-width upper shelf can be a poor design if it forces every elevated position into the same exposure.
For basking species, the basking ledge planning guide helps you think about width, route, heat and UV together.
4. Do not build over the maintenance path
Tubes and fixtures are consumable equipment. They need cleaning, inspection and eventual replacement. Leave enough room to remove the lamp without dismantling permanent rockwork or fighting through a branch maze.
Before fabrication, imagine replacing the fixture with the enclosure fully furnished. If that sounds frustrating on paper, change the design now.
5. Verify the finished geometry, not the drawing
Foam thickness, render, substrate depth and real fixture brackets can move the final animal-to-lamp distance away from the original sketch. Measure the finished enclosure after installation. If a branch is removable, use that flexibility to fine-tune the route rather than forcing permanent scenery to do everything.
Oddball workshop tip
Mark the intended lamp footprint and a “do not build above this line” zone on the enclosure before sculpting starts.
Better than another purchase
Sometimes moving a branch or lowering a platform solves the problem more cleanly than buying a different UVB fixture.
Keep shade intentional
A hide is not the only shade. Overhangs, plants and route geometry can create useful lower-exposure choices without making the enclosure dark.
Quick answers before you buy or rebuild anything.
Can UVB go through glass?
Ordinary glass is not a suitable way to deliver UVB to a reptile. Plan the lamp so the intended UV reaches the animal without an unsuitable barrier.
Is a stronger UVB lamp always better?
No. Output should suit the species, enclosure and distance. More is not automatically better, and the animal needs appropriate choices and shade.
Should UVB overlap the basking area?
For many basking species it is useful to think about heat and UV together, but exact placement is species- and product-dependent. Follow reputable species guidance and the fixture manufacturer’s instructions.
Can Oddball build a ledge around my existing UVB fixture?
Yes. Send the exact fixture/model, mounting position and enclosure measurements so the ledge can be planned around the real geometry rather than a generic lamp assumption.

Husbandry varies by species, enclosure and individual animal. Use reputable species guidance and a reptile-experienced veterinarian where health or welfare is involved.
Know what you want to improve, but not what to call it?
A photo, rough dimensions and the animal species are enough to start. If the sensible answer is a simple adjustment rather than another product, we would rather tell you that.
