Bearded dragon enclosure checklist: plan it before you fill it.
A checklist is useful when it catches missing decisions before the animal moves in. This one is designed to connect husbandry, equipment and physical enclosure layout rather than just produce a shopping list.

Start with the animal’s needs and the enclosure geometry. A backdrop, beautiful rockwork and expensive equipment can still produce a poor setup if the basking route, UVB distance, cooler retreat or cleaning access were never planned together.
Use this checklist as a design review. Tick things off only when you can point to the actual place or piece of equipment that solves the problem.
Before buying décor
- Confirm the exact species and current/adult size.
- Measure the internal usable enclosure dimensions, not only the external product size.
- Photograph vents, door tracks, braces, cable entries and fixture positions.
- Decide where the warm end and cooler retreat will be.
- Choose the heat and UVB layout before permanent ledges are designed.
Basking & UVB
- Provide a broad stable basking surface the dragon can settle on comfortably.
- Confirm the surface can be measured with an appropriate instrument.
- Check the UVB fixture, obstruction and intended animal-to-lamp distance.
- Leave shade and routes away from the main basking/UV zone.
- Keep lamps and fixtures accessible for cleaning and replacement.

Heat control & measurement
- Use a thermostat/controller suited to the chosen heat source.
- Secure the thermostat probe in a meaningful position.
- Use independent digital temperature monitoring.
- Check basking surfaces separately where appropriate.
- Run the enclosure through normal daytime conditions before move-in.
Useful habitat, not just texture
- Create connected routes between floor, basking and resting positions.
- Provide secure shelter and visual breaks.
- Avoid narrow decorative shelves that cannot support the whole animal.
- Keep vents, doors and cleaning access unobstructed.
- Make at least some furniture removable or serviceable.

Daily-life check
- Can water/food bowls be removed without dismantling scenery?
- Can you inspect the main hide?
- Can you clean beneath ledges and around the backdrop edge?
- Can you replace a probe or cable later?
- Can the dragon move away from people/light and rest out of view?
Oddball workshop tip
Put all the equipment on the empty enclosure before approving the final backdrop shape. A few centimetres of lamp bracket or door track can change a good design.
Spend money after the layout
Once the geometry is right, buying the correct controller and lighting becomes much easier because you know the real distances and loads.
Pickup/direct fit option
For a large custom backdrop, collection is our normal handover. If practical, bringing the empty enclosure to us lets us work around the real fit instead of relying on measurements alone.

What should I buy first for a bearded dragon enclosure?
Start with the enclosure plan, heat/UV approach and measuring equipment rather than décor. The exact equipment should suit the species, enclosure and real mounting distances.
Does a bearded dragon need a custom backdrop?
No. A custom backdrop is valuable when it adds usable routes, a broad basking surface, shelter or solves awkward fit/access problems. It is not a requirement for good care.
Can Oddball build the basking ledge into the backdrop?
Yes, where the final layout and equipment positions support it. We prefer to plan the heat/UV geometry first so the ledge is useful rather than decorative.
Can I collect a large backdrop and install it myself?
Yes. Pickup/collection is our normal large-backdrop handover. We can plan sections, fit notes and installation details with you before fabrication.
