Carpet python enclosure ideas built around height, branches and real choices.
Carpet pythons are large, powerful semi-arboreal snakes. A useful enclosure needs enough floor area to move, enough height to climb, secure branches that can carry the snake’s weight, multiple retreat options, and a thermal gradient that works vertically as well as horizontally.
Start with the animal, not the decoration.
These are practical reference points to help you understand the brief before you start buying equipment or designing permanent scenery.
What life looks like when the enclosure actually fits the animal.
“Carpet python” covers a diverse Morelia spilota group. Coastal, jungle, diamond and other forms come from different climates and can differ in adult size and husbandry, so this page uses the coastal carpet python as the main captive-care reference rather than pretending every carpet python is identical.
In the wild, carpet pythons use both the ground and elevated structures. They may rest across branches, in tree hollows, under cover or in roof spaces, and they hunt mammals and birds as ambush predators.
They are solitary animals. A large enclosure should be large for the snake, not treated as spare space for a second python.
Australian native reptiles and amphibians are protected wildlife. Species lists, licence classes, movement rules and record-keeping requirements differ by state and territory and can change. Check the current wildlife authority for your location before acquiring or moving an animal; never take a native animal from the wild.
The numbers matter — but the choices matter more.
Ectothermic animals need access to different microclimates. One thermostat setting or one humidity number is not a complete habitat.
RSPCA guidance for coastal carpet pythons recommends a cooler end in the mid-20s and a hotter end in the mid-to-high 30s. In a tall enclosure, measure both height and floor zones because warm air rises and a branch near a lamp may be much hotter than the floor probe suggests.
A controlled night drop is appropriate in RSPCA guidance. The enclosure should still avoid unsafe cold extremes, particularly for young or unwell animals.
Ambient humidity around 40–60% with access to a moist hide gives the snake a choice during shedding. Do not make the whole enclosure constantly wet.
RSPCA notes carpet pythons are likely to benefit from a brightly illuminated daytime environment and access to UVB. Lighting should still preserve shaded retreats and a night period.
Use reliable digital probes/thermometers and, where appropriate, a surface-temperature tool. Thermostats prevent runaway heating, but they still need sensible probe placement. Do not rely on the dial printed on a heater, room temperature, or the fact that a surface “feels warm” to your hand.
Make every litre of space do something useful.
Good enclosure design creates movement, privacy, thermal choice and easy maintenance — not just a visually busy background.
Scale the enclosure to the snake
A mature carpet python is a large animal. The enclosure must grow with it and allow substantial movement, stretching and climbing rather than simply fitting a coiled snake.
Engineer the branches
Use thick, rigid branches or fabricated perches secured at both ends. A branch that flexes or spins under a 2 m python is not enrichment.
Create a vertical thermal map
Put perches at different distances from heat and light so the snake can choose elevation without being forced into one temperature.
Multiple secure retreats
Provide a snug ground-level hide and consider an elevated covered retreat. Security should be available on both warm and cool sides where practical.
Door and service access
Plan around the reach needed to safely remove bowls, clean, inspect the animal and service heating/lighting. Large decorative features must not trap the snake behind them.
Water and humidity
Provide a stable water vessel and a separate humid retreat rather than trying to maintain high humidity everywhere.
Food is part of husbandry, not a decoration.
Carpet pythons are carnivores. RSPCA guidance recommends appropriately sized thawed, previously humanely killed prey; live prey should not be used because it can injure the snake.
Feeding interval depends heavily on age, prey size, season and body condition. Adult carpet pythons have relatively slow metabolisms and should not be kept permanently “full”.
A snake that regularly regurgitates, loses weight or stops feeding alongside other abnormal signs needs veterinary assessment and a husbandry review.
Give the animal things to choose and do.
- Branch routesUse more than one route between floor and upper perches.
- Different perch diametersOffer broad ledges and rounded branches so the snake can choose how to support its body.
- Covered elevationAn elevated hide or screened perch can let the snake climb without remaining exposed.
- Scent trailsOccasional safe prey-scent or rearranged removable furniture can encourage exploration.
- Space to cruiseLeave clear stretches of enclosure; enrichment is not the same as filling every gap with décor.
Turn husbandry needs into better custom features.
This is where the guide becomes a design brief. The best custom feature solves a real problem and remains serviceable after the novelty wears off.
A structural climbing wall
Integrate large anchor points and broad ledges into a scenic background rather than relying on suction-cup branches.

Things that look fine on day one but become annoying — or unsafe — later.
- Building the enclosure around a hatchling and forgetting the adult may be several metres long.
- Using decorative branches that are not mechanically secured.
- Providing height without a safe route up and down.
- Measuring one thermometer and assuming the whole tall enclosure is the same temperature.
- Keeping the whole enclosure wet to help with shedding instead of offering a humid retreat.
- Co-housing carpet pythons or feeding live prey.
Can you still clean it, measure it and reach it?
Before making a feature permanent, ask whether you can still remove bowls, replace lamps, inspect hides, access pumps or misting lines, move the animal safely and measure temperatures after the scenery is installed.

- Current heat, UV/light, misting or water equipment positions.

Seek a reptile-experienced veterinarian for persistent wheezing, bubbles or discharge, open-mouth breathing, repeated regurgitation, unexplained weight loss, swelling, wounds, burns, neurological signs, significant retained shed or a prolonged appetite change accompanied by other abnormal behaviour. Large pythons also need safe handling plans as they mature.
