Children's python enclosure ideas for a small python with more going on than a plastic tub.
Children's pythons are compact Australian pythons associated with rocky country, woodland and monsoon environments. Their smaller size does not remove the need for choice: they still benefit from secure warm and cool retreats, climbing opportunities, darkness, water, stable temperatures and an enclosure they can explore.
Start with the animal, not the decoration.
These are practical reference points to help you understand the brief before you start buying equipment or designing permanent scenery.
What life looks like when the enclosure actually fits the animal.
Children's pythons occur across northern Australia and use rocky outcrops, woodland, grassland and monsoon habitats. They shelter beneath rock, bark and litter and in cavities such as hollow logs or termite mounds.
They are often described as a beginner-friendly python because of their manageable adult size, but “small” should not be confused with “no enrichment needed”. A secure, well-structured enclosure allows nocturnal exploration, climbing and hiding.
The common name honours zoologist John George Children; it does not mean the species is automatically suitable for unsupervised children.
Australian native reptiles and amphibians are protected wildlife. Species lists, licence classes, movement rules and record-keeping requirements differ by state and territory and can change. Check the current wildlife authority for your location before acquiring or moving an animal; never take a native animal from the wild.
The numbers matter — but the choices matter more.
Ectothermic animals need access to different microclimates. One thermostat setting or one humidity number is not a complete habitat.
RSPCA Australia lists a preferred body-temperature range around 30–33°C for Children’s pythons, with a preferred optimal thermal zone around 25–28°C. In practice that means providing a controlled warm retreat in the low 30s and a distinctly cooler choice rather than heating the whole enclosure to 32°C.
Any heat mat, heat cord, radiant panel or lamp should be controlled and measured so the snake cannot contact dangerously hot surfaces. Probe placement matters — measure where the animal actually sits.
Even a nocturnal snake needs a clear day/night cycle. Bright basking lighting is not the goal; environmental light during the day and darkness at night help maintain normal rhythms.
Keep clean drinking water available and provide a humid hide when useful for shedding rather than keeping the full enclosure wet. Exact humidity needs can vary with room climate and the individual.
Use reliable digital probes/thermometers and, where appropriate, a surface-temperature tool. Thermostats prevent runaway heating, but they still need sensible probe placement. Do not rely on the dial printed on a heater, room temperature, or the fact that a surface “feels warm” to your hand.
Make every litre of space do something useful.
Good enclosure design creates movement, privacy, thermal choice and easy maintenance — not just a visually busy background.
Two secure hides
A warm-side hide and cool-side hide let the snake thermoregulate without choosing between temperature and security.
Escape-proof construction
Small Antaresia can exploit surprisingly small gaps. Cable holes, sliding-door gaps, vents and lid corners need to be genuinely secure.
Useful climbing
Low branches, rocky ledges and cork can add vertical exercise even though the species is not a large arboreal python.
Adult-sized thinking
A roughly 90 × 45 × 45 cm enclosure is a common Australian practical starting footprint for adults, but more usable space can be provided when it is well furnished.
Water
Use a stable bowl large enough for drinking and normal hydration behaviour, positioned so spilled water does not saturate the whole substrate.
Substrate and cleaning
Choose a substrate that can be kept clean and dry while allowing normal movement and hiding. Quarantine/new arrivals may be easier to monitor on simple paper initially.
Food is part of husbandry, not a decoration.
Children's pythons are carnivorous and can be maintained on appropriately sized thawed frozen prey. Do not feed live rodents.
Feeding frequency changes with age, prey size, temperature and body condition. A growing juvenile and an established adult should not automatically receive the same schedule.
Because digestion is temperature-dependent, make sure the enclosure’s warm retreat is stable before feeding rather than trying to “fix” a cold setup after a meal.
Give the animal things to choose and do.

Things that look fine on day one but become annoying — or unsafe — later.
- Using only one hide, forcing the python to trade security for temperature.
- Leaving cable gaps or sliding-door gaps large enough for a small snake to exploit.
- Heating the entire enclosure to the warm-hide temperature.
- Assuming a nocturnal species never climbs.
- Using an exposed heat source or unregulated heat mat.
- Feeding live rodents.
Can you still clean it, measure it and reach it?
Before making a feature permanent, ask whether you can still remove bowls, replace lamps, inspect hides, access pumps or misting lines, move the animal safely and measure temperatures after the scenery is installed.

- Current heat, UV/light, misting or water equipment positions.

Repeated regurgitation, wheezing, nasal bubbles, open-mouth breathing, unexplained weight loss, swelling, wounds, burns, neurological changes, significant retained shed or persistent refusal to feed alongside other signs should be discussed with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
