Heating buying guide · Australia

Pick the heater for the job it has to do.

Australian winters and air-conditioned rooms both test a heater. The right choice depends on whether your animal basks in light, warms its belly on a surface, or needs gentle background heat overnight.

Match heat to behaviour

Bearded dragons and water dragons bask under the sun, so overhead light-and-heat mimics nature. Pythons often take heat from warm surfaces and like a gentle overhead source. Thick-tailed and knob-tailed geckos come out at night and do well with a warm floor zone.

The thermostat is not optional

Every heater can overheat an enclosure on a hot Brisbane afternoon. Dimming thermostats suit visible lamps; pulse or on/off thermostats suit ceramic heaters, deep heat projectors and mats. Fix the probe where the animal actually sits, and check with a separate thermometer.

Guards and clearances

  • Cage any overhead heater the animal can reach — pythons especially.
  • Use ceramic lamp holders rated for the wattage.
  • Never put a heat mat under deep substrate without a thermostat.

Questions keepers ask

What is the best heat source for a python in Australia?

A guarded deep heat projector or ceramic heater on a thermostat is a common choice, often with a warm hide or shelf under it.

Can a heat mat be used for a bearded dragon?

Not as the main heat source. Bearded dragons need an overhead basking spot; a mat doesn’t create one.

Do I need heating in summer?

Often less, but on a thermostat the heater simply works less. Keep it connected for cold nights and air-conditioned rooms.
