Cost guide · Bearded dragon

What a bearded dragon really costs to set up.

The dragon is the cheap part. A safe enclosure, strong UVB, a thermostat and good food are where the money goes — and where cutting corners costs you later.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend on UVB, a thermostat and an adult-size enclosure — those protect the animal. Save on decor by using cleaned natural branches, or invest once in a custom backdrop that adds climbing and basking space without clutter.

Ongoing costs

Food is the main ongoing cost — live insects plus fresh greens. Replace the UVB tube about every 12 months and budget for a vet check each year.

Licensing

Most states require a licence or permit for native reptiles; fees vary. Check with your state wildlife authority before you buy.
