Winter blog · Brumation

Sleepy in winter? Here’s what’s normal.

Between about April and August many Australian reptiles slow right down. That’s often normal brumation — but illness can look similar, so a quick check first gives peace of mind.

Before winter

Book a health check, including a faecal test for parasites, so you’re not guessing. A healthy weight going in makes brumation safer.

During brumation

Keep water available, weigh fortnightly, and keep the normal day–night routine unless your vet advises otherwise. Offer food occasionally, but don’t force it.

Waking up

As the days warm, appetite returns gradually. Start with smaller, easily digested meals and check weight again.
