Species setup · Eastern water dragon

Big, tall and built around water.

Eastern water dragons are confident, active climbers that love to swim. They outgrow small tanks quickly, so plan for height, a real pool and plenty of branches from the start.

Height and branches

Water dragons perch, leap and climb. Thick horizontal branches at different heights, a basking branch under the lamps and a backdrop with ledges turn a tall box into usable territory.

The water area

Give a pool large enough to swim and fully submerge. A filter helps, but expect to clean often — they toilet in water. A drainable or removable tub saves your back.

Humidity without mould

Moderate-to-high humidity suits them, but stagnant air causes problems. Ventilate high and low, and use a substrate that holds some moisture without staying soggy.

Licensing

Native reptiles need a licence or permit in most Australian states and territories. Check your state wildlife authority before you buy.

Questions keepers ask

How big does an eastern water dragon enclosure need to be?

Adults need a large, tall enclosure — commonly around 180 × 90 × 120 cm or more — with room to climb and swim.

Do water dragons need water to swim in?

Yes. A pool large enough to fully submerge is a core part of their care.

Can I keep a water dragon outdoors?

In suitable climates, a secure outdoor enclosure can work well — check your local licence conditions.
