Supplements guide · Australia

Dust smarter, not more.

Supplements are the cheap part of keeping reptiles and the part most often done by guesswork. A simple routine, matched to your lighting, prevents both deficiency and overdose.

What each powder does

Calcium builds bone and shell. Vitamin D3 lets the body use calcium — your UVB light helps make it naturally. Multivitamins cover vitamin A and trace minerals insects lack.

Dust lightly, then feed fast

Shake insects in a container with a pinch of powder until they look lightly dusted, then feed straight away before it falls off. Gut-load insects for 24 hours beforehand with greens and a quality insect diet.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a dish of calcium with D3 in the enclosure — D3 can be overdosed.
  • Using a multivitamin every feed.
  • Relying on supplements to fix poor UVB.
  • Storing powders in a humid spot where they clump and degrade.

Questions keepers ask

How often should I dust crickets for a bearded dragon?

Many keepers dust most feeds for juveniles with plain calcium, use calcium with D3 once or twice a week and a multivitamin weekly. A reptile vet can tailor it.

Do blue-tongues need calcium?

Yes — dust insect and some plant portions, especially for growing animals, alongside good UVB.

Can you overdose calcium?

Plain calcium is hard to overdo; vitamin D3 and vitamin A can be overdosed, which is why schedules matter.
